Partnership for Quality Education (PQE) Programs

The University of Maryland School of Nursing "Partnering to Build Managed Care Competence: Interdisciplinary Training for Nursing and Medicine" project is a collaborative effort to promote managed care education and clinical practice experience to pediatric nurse practitioner students and pediatric medical residents. This initiative provides a focused managed care course that enhances the existing curriculum of the nurse practitioner and pediatric residency programs by combining real-world pediatric clinical learning experiences and managed care practice. Recognizing that the key to effective care in integrated delivery systems is the collaboration and interdependence of multiple disciplines, this program is a "cutting edge" example of interdisciplinary education, interprofessional collaboration, and diversified training opportunities. Moreover, the program incorporates experiential learning to teach the value and need for such programs globally. Administrative rotations and policy development were incorporated to expose nurse practitioner students and medical residents to managed care administration.

Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of the session, the participant of this session will be able to: 1.Discuss key constructs and components related to the structure of the interdisciplinary curriculum and program. 2.Describe skills and abilities necessary to successfully manage interdisciplinary practice within an interprofessional team. 3.Verbalize the importance of the interdisciplinary managed care to primary care education. 4.Identify potential areas within the participant's environment in which PQE may be applicable.
