The susceptibility and health implications of children to environmental toxins is increasingly becoming a relevant public health issue. Accordingly, there is a need to address the concerns of pediatric environmental health utilizing health education, training of health professionals and research methods. Panelists will discuss pediatric environmental health initiatives conducted in the United States with emphasis on timely pediatric environmental exposures including asthma and indoor air allergens. These initiatives are all a consequence of the Pediatric Environmental Health Specialty Units (PEHSU). This program which is funded by Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry, addresses the clinical problems of pediatric environmental health; trains health care professionals in environmental pediatrics; and educates healthcare providers about the impact of environmental hazards on children (defined as up to age 18). The PEHSUs have succeeded in increasing the awareness of health care providers and the general community to the issues of pediatric environmental and occupational health concerns. Panelists will present an overview of the PEHSU Program, provide case studies on several common pediatric environmental health concerns and provide and analysis of PEHSU service data.
