The Internet provides an opportunity to collect data that were previously gathered through "paper and pencil" surveys in an electronic, even interactive, medium. Internet survey methods may be a more cost-effective for both general as well as special population health status assessments and health program evaluations. The development process and content for three different web-based surveys that were applied for health status assessments (of both a general population as well as special population) and for the evaluation of a health program will be described. Considerations for using this medium and technology for survey work will be described, in the context of the purpose as well as intended application of the results of these surveys.
