Barry S. Levy, MD, MPH, Barry S. Levy Associates, P. O. Box 1230, Sherborn, MA 01770, 5086501039, blevy@igc.org

Globalization is having profound impacts on occupational health and safety. One of these impacts is the increase of worker migration both within and between countries, and its adverse health and safety impacts on workers and their families. These impacts include: (1) increased worker exposure to hazardous substances and unsafe working conditions; (2) higher rates of occupational disease and injury; (3) inadequate health and safety training for workers; (4) inadequate protection of worker rights, including the right to organize; and (5) weakening of family and community support systems for workers who migrate. This presentation will describe and give examples of these adverse health and safety impacts. It will also describe approaches to reduce these adverse impacts.

Learning Objectives: By the end of this presentation, attendees will be able: (1) to describe the health and safety impact of worker migration, both within and between countries; and (2) to describe approaches to preventing these adverse impacts.
