The Healthy People 2010 Objectives on Tobacco Control was recognized last year as one of the ten greatest public health achievements of the century in the United States. This reflects the dramatic reduction of smoking prevalence among adults and over from 42.4% in 1965 to 24.7% in 1997. In January 2000, the Department of Health and Human Services published Healthy People 2010, the national health promotion and disease prevention objectives for the Nation. The document contains 21 objectives related to tobacco use. The presenter will focus on describing the collaborative process for developing the objectives (involving academia, practitioners, policy makers, and the public), the challenge of achieving the 21 tobacco objectives, baseline data and plans for tracking progress on the objectives at the state and national levels and among special populations, and opportunities for collaborative multi-sector activities in tobacco control.
