Abstract #25617

Mobilizing the substance abuse prevention organization to outreach to multicultural communities and the disabled: A managerial challenge

Sonya Butler Merrill, PhD, Deputy Director, National Clearinghouse for Alcohol and Drug Information, P. O. Box 2345, Rockville, MD 20847-2345, 301-468-2600 (ext. 312), smerrill@health.org

The presentation addresses the vital role of organizational leadership in creating an organizational culture that welcomes the challenge of prevention outreach to diverse communities. Specifically, the presentation considers various leadership models and highlights aspects of leadership styles that embrace and welcome difference and convey that message to members of the organization. Beyond the academic consideration of leadership styles, the presentation incorporates a case study drawn from the National Clearinghouse for Alcohol and Drug Information. The case study illustrates for conference participants the response of the organization’s leadership to substance abuse prevention outreach initiatives for three unique groups: (1) Hispanic/Latino girls; (2) six Asian communities; and, (3) the hearing and visually impaired. The steps taken by the managers of the Clearinghouse provide a model to other organizations similarly tasked to provide prevention messages to an increasingly global and inclusive community. Learning Objectives: 1. To recognize the importance of the roles of managers and leaders in cultivating commitment to an inclusive outreach mission in substance abuse prevention. 2. To list concrete examples of leadership styles that facilitate accomplishment of an inclusive prevention outreach mission. 3. To analyze the lessons learned by a national clearinghouse tasked with disseminating substance abuse prevention messages to multicultural, multilingual, and disabled populations. 4. To articulate and reinforce the notion that effective outreach to diverse and disabled populations begins within the substance abuse prevention organization.
