Abstract #25957

An IDEAL approach: The information dissemination and education/academic liaison core

Frank Martin, MS, Section of Health Services Research, Baylor College of Medicine, Houston VA Medical Center, 2002 Holcombe Blvd. (39A), Houston, TX 77007, 713-794-8724, fmartin@bcm.tmc.edu

The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) launched the Excellence Centers to Eliminate Ethnic/Racial Disparities (EXCEED) in October 2000. As part of the EXCEED initiative, Baylor College of Medicine's Section of Health Services Research (HSR) was awarded a grant for their research program, "Racial and Ethnic Variation in the Medical Interaction." Baylor's program is co-funded by the Office for Research on Minority Health (ORMH) and housed within the Houston Center for Quality of Care & Utilization Studies. All EXCEED programs were required to propose mechanisms to disseminate information and build research capacity. Baylor's HSR Section designed the Information Dissemination and Educational/Academic Liaison (IDEAL) Core to address their program's dissemination needs. The IDEAL Core is theory-driven and features numerous activities including: news media contact; unlearning racism training; community education forums on how to improve doctor-patient communication; and outreach to high school, HBCU and Hispanic Serving Institutions to increase interest in health services research. The Core relies on a Community Education and Outreach (CEO) Network for guidance. CEOs offer input and advisory assistance with the community education forums, which employ symbolic modeling and cognitive rehearsal techniques. The presenter will also inform attendees about Baylor's research program, inform attendees about research on racial and ethnic variation in patient-physician communication, and encourage exchange with APHA conference participants who are interested in health communication, ethnic minority health, and health services research.

Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of the session, the participant (learner) in this session will be able to: 1. Articulate the important issues and research findings that pertain to racial and ethnic variation in patient-physician communication. 2. Understand the theory and activities that guide the IDEAL Core's dissemination, community education forums, community advisory council, research capacity building, and cultural competency components. 3. Apply the concepts used in the IDEAL Core to other health services research programs, when appropriate.
