Abstract #26009

Transforming a public health website into a global broadcast network: Activities and experiences of the National Clearinghouse for Alcohol and Drug Information

William R. Beard, Media Relations, NCADI, 11426 Rockville Pike, Suite 200, P.O. Box 2345, Rockville, MD 20852, 301-468-2600, ext 260, bbeard@health.org

It is only recently that the term “Webcast” has crept into our lexicon. These Internet-based broadcasts, most often emanating from the Web sites of traditional broadcast media, have proven to be increasingly effective tools for instantly placing important media images and messages in front of a global audience. But Webcasts have been underutilized by public health organizations for communicating public health messages and for advancing public health policy. Such technology is potentially invaluable for reaching across great distances to audiences who, because of geography or the limitations of traditional media, might otherwise not benefit from learning about a new idea, new research, or a new strategy to enhance the health of individuals, communities and nations. This poster session will look at the Webcast-related activities and experiences of the National Clearinghouse for Alcohol and Drug Information (NCADI). NCADI has initiated aggressive steps to harness and utilize the video-streaming technology that makes Webcasting possible. This poster will demonstrate and highlight NCADI Webcast activities in the following key areas:
