This presentation will share needs assessment results from the ACT Project - a large worksite intervention study being conducted in a national retail organization. The first phase of the intervention project was to collect information on the dimensions of work related to employee health and well-being.. A needs assessment instrument was administered to employees in nine stores comprising two districts of a large national retailer (response rate=53%, n=1,130 employees). Data were collected on 16 work factors grouped into three clusters: job design, organizational climate, and job future. Three sets of outcome or benchmark measures were also assessed: employee morale (i.e., organizational commitment and job satisfaction); absenteeism/turnover intention; and employee health. Since the results were to be used by store-level problem-solving teams, individual reports were prepared for each store. As expected, the pattern of findings varied from store to store and between districts. But in general, employee morale and loyalty were quite positive; work expectations appeared to be clear and most jobs are viewed as secure, interesting, and worthwhile. However, results were less positive for several of the climate and job future dimensions, including employee participation, communication, equity, and flexible work arrangements. Although this corporation has shown remarkable growth and financial performance, these needs assessment results provide a mixed picture for a number of work dimensions considered important in today's workplace. They also provide a starting point for problem-solving and the development of strategies to improve organizational health. See www.coe.uga.edu/workplacehealth
