The presentation will address a current community-based research project conducted in Albuquerque's South Valley, a primarily traditional Hispanic community with low SES levels. The project utilizes formal and informal research methodology to identify leading environmental health concerns and factors impacting quality of life among South Valley residents. The research focus of this project examines the relationship between a community's quality of life, environmental health and ethnic/racial factors. The project also focuses on building a respectful partnership for improving community health between residents, community advocates and local county environmental health governmental institutions. In researching perceived versus actual health needs and potential risks to health, the project investigates disparities in health as a result of environmental conditions in this area. Utilizing a community-based approach, the project focuses on developing an environmental action plan in partnership with South Valley residents.
