SESSION ABSTRACT - International substance abuse programs: A UCLA perspective

SESSION ABSTRACT The faculty of the UCLA Integrated Substance Abuse Programs (ISAP) are currently involved in a number of international and multi-site research and training programs. This proposal is to organize a panel of speakers to present some of this work. The panel chair and discussant is Richard Rawson, Ph.D. who is playing a central role in all of the initiatives described in the proposed panel of presentations. Dr. Rawson will present an overview and discuss common themes between all of the presentations. Presentation 1. Richard Isralowitz, Ph.D. Middle East Drug Use Watch (MEDUW): A Trilateral (Palestinian, Israeli, US) Effort to Collect Drug Use Information. Dr. Isralowitz will present a description of this drug use data collection effort designed to assist policy makers and promote peace. Presentation 2. Jeanne Obert, M.A. M.S.M. Exporting Methamphetamine Treatment to Thailand: A Large Scale Technology Transfer Program. Ms. Obert will present a description of this major training and evaluation program designed to build a treatment system in response to a major methamphetamine epidemic. Presentation 3. Felipe Castro, Ph.D. Adapting US Science-based Stimulant Abuse Treatments for Application in Mexico. Dr. Castro will present a description of the activities conducted in Mexico designed to adapt manualized US stimulant abuse treatment materials for use in Mexican treatment centers. Presentation 4. Patricia Marinelli-Casey, Ph.D. The CSAT Methamphetamine Treatment Project: Moving Science into Application. Dr. Marinelli-Casey will describe the eight-site CSAT-funded project, with a particular emphasis on the diversity of challenges faced in moving science-based treatments into US community-based settings.

Learning Objectives: This session will present information concerning a collection of projects being conducted by individuals affiliated with the UCLA Integrated Substance Abuse Programs (ISAP). These projects include substance abuse research and training efforts being conducted in Israel/Palestinian Authority; Thailand; Mexico; and in an eight-site clinical trial in three Western U.S. States. Participants will learn about the rich diversity of problems and opportunities that accompany conducting substance abuse research and treatment efforts across different geographic and cultural distances.
