This presentation will discuss the development and implementation of a comprehensive housing-based environmental inspection and intervention model, the Healthy Homes Initiative. This innovative model, one of 15 HUD demonstration projects nationwide, may serve as a template for enhancing the living conditions of residents in affordable housing units, as well as the health and overall quality of life of residents, by providing holistic housing interventions and education on hazard reduction and/or elimination. The housing-based environmental inspection and testing is enhanced by the provision of education on asthma, lead and accidental injury prevention to residents, managers and owners. The central goal of the program is to reduce the household hazards that lead to asthma in children 18 and younger. The intended outcome of the Healthy Homes Initiative is to identify and create a national model, that is both cost-efficient and cost-effective, to reduce household hazards in the home environment. Data collection and an assessment component, including knowledge, belief and behavioral assessments of participants will supplement the intervention. The evaluation plan and research design will be discussed. Additionally, the presentation will discuss the development of local partnerships including medical experts, home improvement retailers, financial institutions, nonprofits, and residents.
