The purpose of this research is to examine how condom use is affected by 1) the socio-structural and environmental influences and constraints within the work environment, 2) the role of educational policy within the work environment and 3) the level of social influence and reinforcement between manager and employee. Data from this research are obtained from a 36-month prospective study of establishment-based female bar workers (employed in bars, night clubs, disco houses, karaoke TV centers and massage parlors). A total of 1340 bar workers and 308 non-establishment freelance workers comprise the study group. Sexually transmitted disease rates were also collected during this time period. The conclusions presented in this study demonstrate their utility for a wide audience, particularly those involved in HIV and STI prevention programs directed towards the increasing numbers of women working in indirect/non-brothel establishments in which sex work is negotiated or takes place. In establishments where a condom use policy exists, female bar workers were 2.6 times more likely to consistently use condoms during sexual intercourse compared to establishments that do not have such a policy in place.. The results suggest a need for the development of comprehensive educational policies in all entertainment establishments. Particularly important is the relationship between the establishment manager and employees. Meeting regularly with employees, reinforcing positive behaviors, promoting AIDS awareness, mandating condom use and providing condoms in the workplace are key factors that positively influence condom use among female bar workers.

Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of the session, the participant (learner) in this session will be able to: 1. Identify the range of condom use among sex workers; 2. List enviornmental factors significantly predictive of condom use behavior; and 3. Define the role of the establishment manager in reinforcing condom-use behaviors among employees.
