Effective coalitions can harness existing resources to develop a unique community approach and achieve results beyond the scope of one single institution or organization. Building coalitions and working in collaborations are challenging and complex processes. This presentation will discuss ways to identify, analyze and proactively resolve the tougher issues of coalition building and collaboration. The presentation will specifically focus on issues related to inclusion and cooperation, collaboration maintenance and development, and the evaluation of collaborative efforts. Strategies that will be addressed include (1) How to partner with ‘target’ or ‘cultural populations;’ (2) How to work with hostile or adversarial organizations; (3) Important skills for leaders of coalitions and collaborations; (4) How to best document the growth and development of collaboration. The content of the presentation will be derived from the results of an in-depth investigation of the challenges of coalitions and collaborations. The methods used for the investigation include: (1) A comprehensive literature search of journals, books, self-published articles from organizations, and web-based information. (2) Interviews targeted at practitioners with broad experiences in building coalitions and working in collaborations.

Learning Objectives: The presentation will provide a synthesis of the best thinking of how to approach the hard issues of coalition building and working in collaboration. At the conclusion of the presentation, the participant will be able to identify the intricate challenges of coalitions and collaborations and understand practical solutions to these challenges.
