Substantial progress is being made in identifying, cataloging, assessing, and disseminating information to prevention practitioners about substance abuse prevention. The federal government’s Center for Substance Abuse Prevention has initiatives to promote this work including Regional Centers for the Application of Prevention Technology, the Decision Support System, the Regional Alcohol and Drug Awareness Resource Network, the National Center for the Advancement of Prevention, and the National Clearinghouse for Alcohol and Drug Information. In the non-profit sector some of the activities originate from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation which funds programs to achieve broader application of substance abuse prevention practices and Drug Strategies analyzes and publishes score cards on the effectiveness of prevention programs. This analysis quantifies the impact of these activities by setting forth measures on their individual and cumulative impact as well as forecasting their prospective impact. The analysis compares program resources for tobacco prevention and those for alcohol and illicit drugs to determine the impact of funding levels. Findings show substantial increases in categorizations of program quality measures in the organized dissemination of substance abuse prevention materials.

Learning Objectives: equip reader with knowledge about the growth in organization of prevention program information and how to accesws it.
