Abstract #26659

Evaluation of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Cardiovascular Health State Program: Preliminary Findings

Sheree Marshall Williams, PhD, Division of Adult and Community Health /Cardiovascular Health Branch, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 4770 Buford Hwy, MS-K-47, Atlanta, GA 30341-3724, , smw6@cdc.gov

In 1998, the United States Congress provided funding for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to initiate a national, state-based cardiovascular disease prevention program. The Cardiovascular Health (CVH) State Program was started with 8 States with the greatest burden of cardiovascular disease and stroke. Since 1998, the CVH state program has grown to include 25 states. In light of an expanding state program, and the need to demonstrate the effectiveness of programmatic activities, the CDC’s CVH branch has designed and implemented an evaluation of the CVH state program. The evaluation framework employed by the CVH branch follows the CDC-wide framework for program evaluation in public health. The presenters will provide an overview of the evaluation framework for the CDC’s cardiovascular health state program. The session will also highlight evaluation findings; emphasizing areas where States tend to do well and other areas that appear to present challenges for start-up CVH programs. The session will discuss interventions implemented by CVH States. Finally, the session will engage the audience in discussion of evaluation methodology appropriate for state-level goals.

Learning Objectives: (1)Attendees will learn how CVH state programs are able to track measurable cardiovascular health outcomes. (2)Attendees will become familiar with program evaluation options that exist when CVH funding becomes available.
