This presentation will discuss the objectives of the Role of Men program implemented by a local health jurisdiction and its successful outreach throughout the City. The health jurisdiction established an advisory board and convened community partners to develop the Role of Men program to reduce the City's high African-American infant mortality rate. Since the Mid 1990's, the advisory board and Role of Men progam have been implementing a service of local intervention to increase involvement of African-American custodial and non-custodial fathers with their children and female partners. Through community outreach, character building and personal training, the Role of Men program has played a significant role in enhancing parenting skills among African-American males. additionally, since the inception of the program in 1994 the African-American infant mortality rate has decreased by 45%. This decrease in the African-American infant mortality rate over time maybe attributable to various programs provided by the Health Department. The evaluation methods of the Role of Men program will also be dicussed.

Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of this presentation, the participant should be able to: 1. Discuss the objectives of the Role of Men Program. 2. Understand the purpose of community outreach. 3. Dicuss the methods and tools of community outreach.
