War and public health

This session will feature presentations (including question-and-answer periods) on subjects of current importance concerning war and public health. The session will be moderated by Barry S. Levy, MD, and Victor W. Sidel, MD, who have worked extensively in this area and have edited an APHA book entitled, "War and Public Health" (Updated Edition, 2000). Topics to be covered in this session are: (1) assessing the public health response to U.S. bioterrorism initiatives; (2) war and human rights; (3) an update on he Taliban’s war on women; and (4) conflict in the former Yugoslavia and the Palestinian Territories.

Learning Objectives: By the end of this session, attendees will be able to: (1) describe current issues pertaining to war and public health; and (2) describe public health approaches for addressing these issues effectively.
