With the number of health-related Web sites estimated between 17,000 and 45,000, the Internet is an emerging and potentially powerful influence on health. The main use of the Internet in the area of health has been for information dissemination. There has been little research examining the quality of interactive behavior change programs on the Internet, and even fewer investigations of the effectiveness of such programs. Interactive behavior change programs available to the public on the Internet were examined as part of a larger study contracted by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. An evaluation of behavior change content and interactivity was conducted using existing guidelines for behavior change counseling as a template. The fluid nature of the Internet presents many challenges for evaluations of this kind. This presentation will discuss the programs that are currently available on the Internet for health behavior change, as well as implications for future program development. Discussion also will include experiences and challenges with the evaluation of health behavior change sites, the need for theoretical and scientific guidance in site development, issues pertaining to the rapid dissemination of health information and programs on the Internet, and implications for further research.

Learning Objectives: Objectives: At the conclusion of this session, participants will be able to: · Describe the need for theoretical and scientific guidance in the development of health behavior change programs on the internet; · Articulate the inherent difficulties with evaluating Internet programs aimed at health behavior change.
