The present paper, based on 56 in-depth case studies, 52 Focus Group Discussions, and a household survey of 200 women attempts to understand sexual and contraceptive behaviour of women in Bangladesh. The findings reveal that at the time of marriage few women know about sex life. After marriage initially they pass through difficult experiences. While majority coup up with those disturbing experiences, few develop negative attitude towards sexuality leading to frequent sexual violence in their married life. Unwanted pregnancy was frequent in this group. Women who were aware of sex life after marriage, had smoother transformation to married life. Boys come to know about sex life much earlier and one of the most important sources of their information, beside friends, is a blue movies. The study shows that in general women enjoy sexual life, though their desire and concept of sexuality vary from their husbands. They like more togetherness, affection and occasional sex. Men generally want sex almost daily and denial of sex by wives frequently leads to physical and frequently sexual violence. Though discussing or expressing desire for sex to husband is considered shameful act, the study reveals several code words and body language, used by women to express their sexual desire . Surprising however, is the ease with which they communicate, at a very early stage of their married life, about family planning and the number of children they would like to have. Perhaps family planning program of Bangladesh has de-sexualized contraceptive use from their concept of sexuality.
