Linda Wong Kerberg, Office of Violence Prevention, County of San Diego Health and Human Services Agency, 4438 Ingraham Street, San Diego, CA 92109, 858/490-1670, lwongkhe@co.san-diego.ca.us

The County of San Diego Domestic Violence Fatality Review Team is a multi-agency collaborative, which meets monthly to review the deaths from intimate partner violence. The team’s purpose is to make recommendations for system’s change, to prevent future deaths from intimate relationship violence. The team’s objectives are to: 1) establish a learning process, which brings together public and private agencies, to identify their respective roles and what potential collaborative opportunities exist, by working together to prevent domestic violence and ultimately, death. 2) Collect data from various agencies and systems about the victims of domestic violence homicides and suicides, in order to evaluate the coordination of systems and the accessibility of services. 3) Determine the trends and specific indicators for domestic violence homicides and suicides, to be used to develop policy and program recommendations for future violence prevention programs. 4) Increase public awareness and involvement in the prevention and intervention of domestic violence. Potential obstacles for a governmentally funded team can include: identifying key individuals with agency support, ability to review recent cases, confidentiality of case review information and implementation of the team’s recommendations.

Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of the session, the participant in this session will be able to: 1. Articulate the process of developing a intimate partner, domestic violence fatality review team. 2.Identify key individuals from agencies and programs for team membership. 3.Recognize the political obstacles surrounding a death review team.
