In the current political climate, program evaluations have focused increasingly on abstinence-only or abstinence-plus programs and there are relatively few evaluations of comprehensive programs currently underway. We report initial findings of an evaluation of a new multi-component sexuality education and teen pregnancy prevention program implemented by Planned Parenthood of New York City in several K-8th grade public schools. The program includes 8-20 hours of direct sexuality education to students, 10-20 hours of training for teachers and other school personnel, and intensive outreach and communication workshops for parents. Evaluation of the program was restricted to 6th-8th graders and focused on measuring (1) sexuality- and values-related communication between students and their parents and teachers; (2) knowledge about pregnancy and disease prevention; (3) attitudes including perceived social norms related to teen sexual behavior and parenting; and (4) sexual behavior and behavioral intentions. Baseline measures were administered by computer using the audio-CASI system; several waves of follow-up measurement are planned. Demographically-matched comparison schools are also involved in the evaluation. Results of the baseline measurements will be described along with initial findings from the first follow-up on program-related changes in communication, knowledge, attitudes, intentions, and sexual behaviors.

Learning Objectives: At the end of the presentation, participants will be able to: (1) describe effects of a new comprehensive sexuality education and teen pregnancy prevention program, including effects on parent-child communication, knowledge, attitudes, intentions, and behaviors; (2) discuss the role of teachers and other key adults in creating sexually healthy norms for youth.
