How Information Technology and Instructional Design Interact in Developing Online Courses and Web-Assisted Programs

Information technology has revolutionized online education and training. With students literally spanning the globe, an effective online program requires a strong technology infrastructure and support system. Yet, the importance of the technology is eclipsed by the need for effective instructional design. Incorporating the principles of instructional design helps ensure that the focus is on learning and teaching, rather than the technology. Without the continual communication of a face-to-face encounter, planning the pedagogical approach becomes critical because a student may never even meet the instructor.

This session will describe the roles of technology and instructional design in the development and support of the distance educational offerings at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Public Health (SPH). The presenters will discuss the primacy of instructional design issues in approaching distance education development. The session will outline the technology needed to implement online educational programs on a large scale. The presenters will outline the necessary technology from server farms to network infrastructure to 24-hour help lines needed to mount online educational programs in a global context. Presenters will describe the roles of technologists, instructional designers, and faculty and explain how they work together in a setting where no one has the final say, yet everyone has an important part to play in the development of online courses.
