A collaborative initiative to educate youth about health and health careers

Health Resource and Service Administration (HRSA) has funded programs to recruit minority students into health profession careers. Georgia State University School of Nursing (GSU-SON) as a partner with Morehouse School of Medicine and many other schools are working together to develop a seamless pipeline for students from elementary school through college. The GSU-SON in partnership with the Martin Luther King, Jr. (MLK) Urban Learning Center developed a "Summer Math and Science Academy" (SMSA). The goals of the SMSA is to: 1) help build a stronger foundation in math and science for middle school age students; 2) expose students to health careers with the goal of peaking students interest in those careers; and 3) increase scores on the ITBS tests in science and math. At the conclusion of this presentation participants will be able to: 1) describe a partnership which linked into funding to support a summer math and science academy program; 2) list several factors which strengthen community-based partnerships; and 3) discuss a program the "Summer Math and Science Academy" and the change in students' interest in health professional careers.

Learning Objectives: 1)describe a partnership which linked into a summer math and science academy 2) illustrate how students participating in the summer math and science academy has strengthened their knowledge of health and increased interest in health professions careers and 3)list several factors which strenghten community based partnerships.
