Abstract #28566

Four directions health communications - implementation of culturally relevant media campaigns for Navajo people

Michelle Hayes and Norman P. Brown. 4DHC - HP/DP, Shiprock Health Promotion Program, Box 160, Shiprock, NM 87420

The Four Directions Health Communications Team is a successful wellness marketing and media development group, based on the Diné philosophy of the four directions. Traditionally, important information was passed down from one Diné generation to the next through the storyteller. Today, our tools to communicate allow us to reach thousands of Diné people with important health information on a daily basis through graphics, radio, and television. Some of their accomplishments from 2000 including

• Development of the first Navajo Language feature film (with English subtitles) to be accepted and presented at the Sun Dance Film Festival. “Horse Song” presents the story of a young Navajo man and his family faced with the emotional and traditional aspects involved in the diagnosis of diabetes.

• The development of four seasonal campaigns based on Navajo traditional philosophy, which focus Heath Promotion efforts both in the media and community event areas.

Learning Objectives: after participating in this session, participants will be able to describe how traditional Navajo philiosphy is used to organize modern media campaigns and messages.
