The decade long primary health care programs of an urban academic nursing center are the basis for the newly developed urban health curricula and certificate programs for the graduate and undergraduate nursing and health science students. The integration of community need and interest, university location, unique programmatic foci, and the urban health agenda of the nursing center frames the current courses. Each course builds on the unique features of the nursing center model and incorporates service/learning opportunities with diverse populations. The presentation outlines the course and certificate development and highlights the unique features of the course offerings. Courses include 1) Unhealthy Urban Environments: Healthy Solutions; 2) Plagues and Epidemics Across the Centuries: The Philadelphia Story; 3) The Health of the Nation: Cultural Diversity and Health Disparities; 4) Multimedia Health Communication: Preparing for the Future; 5) Special Populations: Men's Health and Mental Health; and 6)Urban Health: Families in Jeopardy. Certificate criteria for undergraduate and graduate students are outlined.
