Abstract #28871

Teaching and learning the ABC of Epi Info 2000: Data analysis techniques for one world - global health

Adenike Bitto, MD, DrPH, MPH, CHES, ESU, P.O. Box 155, East Stroudsburg, PA 18301, (570)422-3375, adenike.2doc@usa.net

During this session participants will learn the basics of using Epi Info 2000 for public health data analysis. “Epi Info” is a CDC trademark and a public domain computer package developed by CDC. The program has general database and statistics applications, with special relevance for conducting outbreak investigations and managing databases for public health surveillance. This hands-on technology based session will provide conference participants with an opportunity to practice their epidemiologic skills. Fundamentals of Epi Info 2000 will be reviewed including how to download and install the program from the CDC website URL http://www.cdc.gov/epiinfo/EI2kdown.htm and how to obtain technical assistance for Epi Info 2000 computing. Participants will review the online guided tours. They will use Epi Info to develop a questionnaire, enter data, analyze, interpret results, and report on a sample data set from epidemiologic practice surveillance, assessment, prevention and intervention. Several basic commands will be demonstrated including MakeView (Make New View, Creating fields, Adding pages, and Using related views), Enter Data, Analysis (Read, List, Freq, Tables, Graph, Select, Write to a new table), Epi Map 2000 GIS (Geographic Information System), and interactive teaching exercises in the tutorials menu (for example, the Rhodococcal Infection exercise). Additionally, participants will share past expertise in using Epi Info 2000 and Epi 6. In conclusion, conference participants will learn the nitty-gritty of Epi Info 2000 from this hands-on applied epidemiology data analysis session. Participants’ evaluations will provide useful feedback for future improvements in this technology-based and technology dependent epidemiologic practice session.

Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of the session, the participant (learner) in this session will be able to: (i) Successfully download a copy of the Windows-based Epi Info 2000 from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website, URL http://www.cdc.gov/epiinfo/EI2kdown.htm (ii) List components of the complete installation package, and articulate how to install Epi Info 2000; (iii) Describe how to join the Epi Info Worldwide Discussion Group/Listserv and how to obtain technical support from the Epi Info Hotline; (iv) Perform an analysis of a sample data set from epidemiologic practice (surveillance, assessment, or prevention and intervention), interpret the findings and write a brief report using Epi Info 2000; (v) Share past expertise in using Epi Info 2000 and Epi 6 with other conference participants.
