"The Holy Alliance": Public health and faith community partnerships

Adewale Troutman, MD, MPH, Fulton County Department of Health and Wellness, 99 Butler St, Atlanta, GA 30303, 404-730-1200, drtroutman@mindspring.com

The definition of health adopted by the Fulton County Department of Health and Wellness (FCDHW) is the harmonious balance of mind, body and spirit. This definition coupled with the historical role of the African American church in the survival and growth of the community led us to the development of the “Holy Alliance”, a partnership between 55 African American churches in South Fulton County Georgia and the FCDHW. This partnership, built on the principal of capacity building, technical assistance and leadership by example is in its second year. The presentation will discuss the achievements of the first year of this partnership, the process of consensus building among the partners as well as the significant issues in working with this faith community for the common goal of improving the health of the community. It will also outline a theory and a structure of service delivery that has been the guiding principal of this alliance.

Learning Objectives: Develop partnerships between the faith sector and communities.

Keywords: Faith Community, Community-Based Partnership
