Ignatius Bau, JD, Asian and Pacific Islander American Health Forum, 942 Market Street, Suite 200, San Francisco, CA 94102, 415-954-9951, ibau@apiahf.org

In January 2001, the President's Advisory Commission on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders issued its Interim Report, "A People Looking Forward: Action for Access and Partnerships in the 21st Century" as part of the White House Initiative on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders established by Executive Order 13125. The goal of the White House Initiative is to improve the quality of life of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders by increasing their participation in federal programs and services, especially where they are underserved and underrepresented.

This unprecedented report summarizes community testimony as well as inventories and action plans from all fourteen Cabinet departments and eighteen executive agencies. The report includes interim findings and recommendations on data, cultural competence and linguistic access, civil rights, community capacity-building and inclusion of Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders. It also details federal government activities and programs that are relevant to Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders, including many public health programs and activities.

The Interim Report is a useful reference in itself as well as a tool for holding the federal government accountable to serve Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders. This session will review the sections of the Interim Report relevant to public health issues and assist participants in using the report in their local communities, especially in Asian American and Pacific Islander communities that have been underserved and underrepresented.

The session presenter served as the lead writer of the Interim Report.
