Nsedu Obot, MPH, Children's Environmental Health Network, 110 Maryland Ave., NE, Suite 511, Washington, DC 20002, (202) 543-4033 x14, nobot@cehn.org

Currently, asthma is the number one reason for school absenteeism and the most common chronic disease among children in the United States. Within the entire population the prevelance of asthma continues to be on the rise, disproportionately effecting African American communities and families of lower social economic status. This session will look at asthma disparities and disparities in health information as well as the barriers to research and programs reaching communities most at risk. Specifically, the tremendous impact of the growing digital divide upon access to health information will also be discussed.

Learning Objectives: 1) Participants will understand key issues associated with health outcome disparities, including asthma, and steps to reduce those disparities. 2) Participants will understand the role of information disparities in creating barriers to health outcomes and community involvement. 3) Participants will understand key strategies for reduction of barriers between critical environmental health research and communities at risk.
