National Health Interview Survey-Disability Supplement: Nature and correlates of childhood disability

This study is one of several complementary studies examining the use of population based data to estimate the prevalence and correlates of disability in children. Much of the available research on functional characteristics of children with disabilities is based on studies with varying definitions of disability and limited sample sizes. In keeping with the Healthy People 2010 goals of reducing disparities associated with disability, this study documented dimensions of disability in children. Specifically, this study examined the nature and correlates of disability among children using the National Health Interview Survey - Disability Supplement (NHIS-D). The identification of variables was based on the International Classification of Impairments, Disabilities, and Handicaps (ICIDH-2) framework of activities, participation, and environmental factors. Results of the study define limitations in the performance of activities in the primary environments of home and school of children with disabilities. At the conclusion of this session, participants will be able to describe the characteristics of children with disabilities in the NHIS-D sample. Participants will also be able to identify several specific environmental factors that facilitate or hinder the full participation of children with disabilities in daily life.
