Surgeon General David Satcher recently stated that the epidemic of youth violence in the United States is not over. Self-report studies indicate that the proportion of youth involved in violent behavior and the rates of violent offending have not declined since the mid-1990’s.
Researchers have determined that schools play a significant role in violence prevention. Students who report positive feelings of connectedness to school are more protected from violent behavior than students who do not report such feelings. Students feel connected to schools when teachers treat them fairly, when they feel a part of the school, and when other kids are not prejudiced.
To address the relationship between school climate and connectedness as a violence prevention strategy, the Hennepin County Community Health Department undertook a collaborative project. Partners included the Initiative for Violence Free Families, the County Attorney’s office, and school districts. The goal of the School Climate Forum was to learn how to create safe and welcoming school environments by building positive connections with students. This Forum, designed for teachers, students, school staff, administrators, and parents, highlighted examples of activities and policies that are currently in practice.
Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of the session, APHA participants will be able to: 1. Identify the key pieces in the collaborative process 2. Describe 5 strategies to address school connectedness 3. Identify links to other health promotion activities
