As more children are being cared for in out-of-home child care programs, there are increasing requests for child care providers to administer medications. The Minnesota Child Care Health Consultants and the Minnesota Department of Health came together to address medication safety and decrease the numbers and type of medications child care providers are asked to administer to children while they are in a "well" child care setting. The information included in this presentation will include the written recommendations and guidelines developed for medication administration and storage, memos used to communicate recommendations, standard medication form and educational resources. The response from the child care community has been very positive. Many of the providers have responded, saying Thank You for helping me with this difficult issue. These recommendations and guidelines, forms and resources can be easily adapted by others who also face the growing number of requests to provide medication to children while in child care.
Learning Objectives: Describe the issues related to administering over the counter medications in a child care setting. Identify information child care providers need to safely administer medication. Discuss the role of the child care health consultant in safe medication administration. Identify how you might be able to utilize the process and information presented.
