Assessing the Health and Socioeconomic Status of Palestinian Refugees: Methods, Results and their Implications for International Refugee Policy

This paper examines the health and related socioeconomic status of Palestinian refugees residing in the West Bank and Gaza and of UNRWA-registered refugees residing elsewhere. It also reviews UNRWA and host-country policies and programs with respect to refugee health and social services, the impact of these policies and programs, and compares these policies and programs with those for other refugee populations. The paper describes alternative proposals for providing health and social services to Palestinian refugees and the health services access, health status, and cost implications of these alternatives.

Learning Objectives: At the end of the presentation, participants will: 1) Be able to describe generally the health and socioeconnomic conditions of Palestinian refugees 2) Be able to describe U.N. and country policies with respect to providing health and social services to refugees in general and to Palestinian refugees particularly 3) Be able to describe alternative policies that have been discussed with respect to ensuring access to health care by Palestinian refugees specifically and others generally
