Deborah Allen, ScD, Commonwealth of Massachusetts, Department of Public Health, 200 Washington Street, Boston, MA 02108, 61762450760, Deborah.Allen@state.ma.us

The nation’s 2010 health objectives address childhood disability in two key sections: Chapter 16 (Maternal and Child Health) and Chapter 6 (Disability and Secondary Conditions). Each represents a historic effort to advance an agenda that acknowledges, accommodates and “normalizes” disability in America across the lifespan. Chapter 16 objectives focus on systems of health and related services for children with special health care needs. Chapter 6 objectives focus on social and emotional effects of disability on the lives of children. This presentation will look at both sets of objectives, but emphasize child-focused elements in Chapter 6, especially those related to mental health, educational inclusion, and institutional care.

Learning Objectives: Following this session, participants will understand the rationale for each of the 2010 objectives which focus on improved quality of life for children with disabilities. Participants will also be able to identify at least 3 strategies that could be employed to achieve each of those objectives.
