Abstract #31074

Art AIDS In Africa

Folami Harris, mph, , sulyrum@mscisa.org.za

Art AIDS Africa© is a newly formed non-profit organisation created to provide funding for HIV/AIDS programs in Africa. It assists in bridging the gap between needs and resources for targeted community-based programs in Africa. Support is generated through donations, grants and the sale of traditional African art. Our mission is to reduce the devastating impact of AIDS in Africa while promoting African Art. We accomplish this by: developing a reliable market for high quality traditional African art, a market capable of generating resources for local, organised community initiatives against HIV and AIDS; investing in local artists and art co-operatives, thereby providing communities opportunities to achieve greater economic stability through a reliable source of income and providing people of good will, like yourself, an opportunity to support Africa’s fight against HIV and AIDS.

Art AIDS Africa begins in Africa, where items are individually chosen for quality and authenticity. Purchases are made from artists and craft co-operatives throughout Southern Africa. Our selections are shipped to us and we post them on our web site where individuals who want to contribute to Africa’s fight against HIV/AIDS, purchase items. Sale proceeds are then returned to Africa as small grants in support of organised grassroots efforts to combat HIV infection and care for those affected by AIDS and as reinvestments in local artisans. Art AIDS Africa creates a cycle of economic support that has both its origin and destination in Africa.

Art AIDS Africa is a significant contributor to community health with important advantages.
