In June 1995, The National Commission for Health Education Credentailing, Inc, and the Coalition of National Health Education Organizations, USA, convened an invitational forum in Atlanta, Georgia, to consider the future of the health education profession. Representatives from nine health-education professional organizations were asked to identify current and emerging challenges for the health education profession and activities needed to address these challenges. The group identified actions needed both internal and external to the profession in six focal areas: promoting the profession, research, advocacy, professional preparation, quality assurance, and dynamic/contemporary practice. This presentation will summarize the work of the national professional organizations in accomplishing these activities since 1995, and suggest future directions for both individuals and organizations to ensure the viability and growth of the health education profession in the 21st century, emphasizing the outcomes of this process, and the recommended next steps for the profession. What can you do to advance the field of health education?

Learning Objectives: Participants will be able to describe the progress of professional organizations in advancing the overall goals of health education. Participants will be able to explain what organizations might do to advance the health education profession as we move into the 21st century.
