Background College students at Southern University A & M College, like at most colleges, have a lack of knowledge about how physical fitness and healthy eating habits can reduce or prevent chronic illnesses. In order to decrease the mortality rate and health problems, young adults need to be educated and encouraged about the benefits of nutrition and physical fitness. Purpose The purpose of this study was to increase nutrition knowledge and physical activity among college students at Southern University. Methods This study examined nutritional health and physical activity issues of Southern University college students by identifying current nutrition and physical fitness resources on campus, conducting a nutrition and physical fitness survey, and by promoting and implementing nutrition and physical fitness activities. The college students who assisted with the project promoted each of the activities. Results Balancing time between school, work, and the study was a problem among students making it difficult to attract as many participants as desired. It was also revealed that many students were not interested or too preoccupied to partake of the activities. Adherence to required college policies and procedures delayed progress and productivity in completing some activities. Conclusion: This study provided an opportunity to learn more about the health of the students at Southern University and what activities were needed to improve nutritional and physical health. However, educating and motivating the students to commit to making a lifestyle change to improve their overall health still remains a challenge.

Learning Objectives: Obtain knowledge of methods used to assess nutrition knowledge and physical activity habits of college students
