Infusing social justice throughout the curriculum: The University of New Mexico MPH Program Experience

The mission statement of the University of New Mexico Masters in Public Health Program espouses a social justice perspective and partnering with communities, tribes, and the public and private sectors to build on community strengths in order to increase their capacity to respond to public health problems. In adopting this mission statement, each faculty member was asked to incorporate core values of equity, prevention, and a systems approach. Courses as diverse as Epidemiology, Cultural and Social Theory, Principles of Public Health, and Public Policy examine race, class, gender, and rural and urban perspectives through examination of state, national and global public health problems. Practice applications are encouraged through problem-based materials, involvement with community practitioners and engagement in the field. This session will provide an overview of the U.N.M. MPH Program with specific examples of course materials, as well as discuss the difficulties of fully implementing this approach. See hsc.unm.edu/scm/mph/
