Abstract #31552

Working With Partners

Deborah Maine, Heilbrunn Center for Population and Family Health, Mailman School of Public Health, Columbia University, 60 Haven Avenue, B-3, New York, NY 10032, 212-304-5250, dpm1@columbia.edu

The goal of the Averting Maternal Death and Disability (AMDD) Program is to reduce maternal deaths by improving women's access to emergency obstetric care (EmOC) in Asia, Africa and Latin America. The Mailman School of Public Health and Columbia University was given $50 million over 5 years to pursue this goal. Rather than creating a large staff at Columbia, opening offices in many countries, and negotiating agreements with governments, we chose to work with and through partner agencies, particularly UNICEF, UNFPA, CARE, and Save the Children, together with a series of experts from other organizations. We have two types of partnerships: project or implementing partners, and technical partners. We will discuss the rationale and benefits of this approach.

Learning Objectives: By the end of this presentation, participants will be able to discuss the various reasons for working through partnerships, including reasons related to efficiency, economy, project quality and program impact
