Gerald H. Ohta, Affirmative Action Office, State of Hawai`i Department of Health/Hawai`i Public Health Association, P.O. Box 3378, Honolulu, HI 96801-3378, 808-586-4616, ghohta@mail.health.state.hi.us

Hawai`i has rich public health beginnings - from the traditional health practices of native Hawaiians, to the first written public health measure of Kina`u (Premier and native Hawaiian woman), to the establishment of the first state department of health by 1851-1853 from its initiation in 1850 under King Kamehameha III. This preceded the Board of Health in Louisiana which was established in 1855. This rich history of Hawai`i and its public health milestones in Hawai`i over the last 150 years are outlined. See www.hawaiipublichealth.org, http://www.hawaii.gov/health

Learning Objectives: To identify the year of the first written public health measure in Hawai`i. To list the years that the first and "second state departments of health in the nation were established. To list at least three milestones in the more than 150 years of public health in Hawai`i.
