Additional evidence of the effectiveness of ASSIST media advocacy

Previous work (Stillman, Cronin, Evans & Ulasevich, in press) based on the ASSIST media tracking system showed evidence that the rate of media coverage of tobacco control issues is higher in ASSIST states than non-ASSIST states. Controlling for possible baseline differences in states' commitment to tobacco control, these findings suggested the effectiveness of ASSIST media advocacy efforts. Using an index of media activity that combines both frequency and slant of articles (Media Advocacy Variable, or MAV), findings from analyses of the ASSIST intervention as a whole showed a similar difference between ASSIST and non-ASSIST states. These results cross-validate our earlier findings and lend further support to the conclusion that ASSIST media advocacy efforts were effective.
