In 1992, the American Public Health Association (APHA) and the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) jointly published Caring for Our Children: National Health and Safety Performance Standards: Guidelines for Out-of-Home Child Care Programs. The publication was the product of a 5 year national project funded by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Maternal and Child Health Bureau (MCHB). This comprehensive set of health and safety standards was a response to the call for "uniform national child care standards" enunciated in the National Research Council's report, Who Cares for America's Children? Child Care Policy for the 1990's. This session will introduce the second edition of Caring for Our Children. We will discuss why a new edition was deemed necessary, describe the process of revision, and highlight some of the changes in the new standards. The interest in and the enrollment of young children in early childhood education programs continues to increase not only in the US but in other nations in the world. The years since the first edition have demonstrated not only the general applicability and usefulness of the standards but also the need for revised or new standards.
