Abstract #32281

Recruitment of children into sex work: some risk factors, health consequences and programme interventions in South Asia

Ruth Finney Hayward, PhD, Ending Violence Against Women and Girls, UNICEF, , N@A

Based primarily on interviews with selected organizations working against trafficking in Bangladesh, India and Nepal, this paper reviews 1) risk factors in South Asia for recruitment of children into sex work, 2) health consequences both during the active period of sex work and afterwards, 3) characteristics of related programme interventions, and 4) challenges that remain for public health approaches to the problem. Given the extent to which "poverty" is often claimed to be the primary cause of child trafficking, it is particularly noteworthy that extreme gender discrimination and sexual abuse in the family appear as risks for a girl-child's being trafficked
