Abstract #32412

Assessing health and conservation at the community level

Jonnell Allen, Consultant, , jonnell_allen@yahoo.com

Conservation International's Healthy Communities Initiative and the Biodiversity Support Program's Analysis and Adaptive Management Program collaborated on a study that documents examples in which community-based health has been used to motivate local populations to conserve biodiversity across the developing world. The results of the study present observations about the varying degree of operational and conceptual linkage that have been present in integrated health and conservation projects and how these linkages may influence project acceptance and sustainability. The final analysis also provides recommendations based on conservation and health practitioners' experience designing, managing and monitoring integrated health and conservation projects.

Learning Objectives: Identify key indicators used in a joint health and conservation assessment.
