Intimate partner violence among Latina populations is becoming increasingly of concern. Human and health service providers often believe that Latina populations are particularly at-risk for intimate partner violence due to multiple risk factors (such as poverty). Justifying intimate partner violence services for Latino populations, such as shelters and counseling or treatment for offenders, requires that agencies have data indicating a need for such services. An epidemiological study will be presented which will collect data on the prevalence of intimate partner violence among three groups of Latina populations: migrant (agricultural); immigrant (non-agricultural); and U.S.-born Latina populations. Measures of experience and exposure to violence will be assessed as well as risk and protective factors associated with varying levels of risk. This project will involve the sampling of over 360 Latinas equally divided across the three groups of concern. A particular emphasis of the study is the measurement and anaylsis of the role of culture in intimate partner violence. Characteristics of this two-year study will be presented and methodological issues and challenges will be highlighted in the presentation. The study is being conducted by researchers at the Child & Adolescent Services Research Center at Children’s Hospital in San Diego and the National Latino Research Center (NLRC) at California State University San Marcos. The NLRC was established in 1998 with the purpose of promoting scientific research, training and exchange of information related to Latino populations in the United States.

Learning Objectives: 1. To become aware of the problem of intimate partner violence among Latina populations. 2. To learn about a project that will assess the prevalence and correlates of intimate partner violence among three groups of Latinas: Immigrants non-migrants, agricultural migrants and U.S.-born Latina non-migrants. 3. To become familiar with the National Latino Research Center and it's objectives.
