Supply and Future Demand for Public Health Nurses and Nurses

The purpose of this session is to present preliminary findings on public health and community health nurses from the National Sample Survey of Registered Nurses (NSSRN) 2000 and other recent studies relevant to the public health nursing workforce produced by the Bureau of Health Professions, HRSA. Trend data will be provided on selected variables from the NSSRN. Questions related to scope of practice and relationship of official agencies to population-focused responsibilities and activities of managed care organizations are discussed. Issues related to future data needs and data sources to assist in workforce planning and education are presented for discussion.

Learning Objectives: 1. Discuss trends of the public health nursing workforce. 2. Describe the scope of practice and its relationship of offcial agencies to population-focused responsibilities.
