James Trudeau, Ph D, Research Triangle Institute, 3040 Cornwallis Rd., Research Triangle Park, NC 27709, 703-730-9472, trudeau@rti.org

The SS/HS national evaluation addresses the six key elements of the SS/HS program: school safety; safe school policies; alcohol, tobacco and other drug (ATOD) prevention and violence prevention and intervention; early childhood psychosocial and emotional development programs; school and community mental health preventive and treatment interventions; and educational reform. The evaluation includes process and outcome elements, uses varied techniques (surveys, focus groups, archival data collection) and draws from varied disciplines (e.g., public health, education). Evaluation activities are ongoing in 77 sites, with particular focus on 13 “sentinel” sites with enhanced data collection. The presentation will feature sampling design, including selection of sentinel sites and sampling designs for the various surveys.

Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of this presentation, the participant will be able to 1) Describe the general design of the SS/HS National Evaluation; 2) Describe the key features and challenges of evaluating SS/HS at the national level.
