Oral Session

Global Environmental Change, Bioterrorism, and Public Health

Accelerating globalization in trade, travel and industry have forced changes in the natural environment. Threats of global warming, stratospheric ozone depletion, and urban sprawl, make health relevant environmental conditions now reach far beyond one’s local surroundings. Similarly, microbial traffic due to international travel, deforestation, or intentional acts of bioterrorism require new understanding and tactics for prevention. Leading national and international experts are being convened for this global session that is central to this year’s conference theme. Invited speakers and presentations include: Michael McGeehin, CDC Director, Division of Natural Hazards and Health Effects. "Insights from the US National Assessment on Climate Variability and Change." Howard Frumkin, Chairman, Environmental and Occupational Health, Emory University. "Urban Sprawl and the Atlanta Heat Island Effects." Kris Ebi, EPRI. "New Findings and Tools for Climate Change & Health Assessments." Jonathan Patz, Johns Hopkins. "Deforestation and the Resurgence of Malaria in the Amazon." Eric Noji, CDC Branch Chief, Bioterrorism, Preparedness and Response Program. "Bioterrorism as a new Global Environmental Threat."
See individual abstracts for presenting author's disclosure statement.
