The Healthy Start Partnership at its Best

Despite the fact that adolescent pregnancy has declined overall in the United States, Illinois ranks 10th in the nation in terms of high adolescent pregnancy rates. For example, the adolescent pregnancy rate increased 25% among Hispanic/ Latino young women in Illinois. On the other hand pregnancy outcomes such as infant mortality and infant born of low birth, have remained high among African American women and is emerging as a problem among second and third generation Hispanic and Latino young women. The purpose of this Healthy Start Presentation is to highlight the Illinois Healthy Start Partnership and activities. Topics include Combining Doula and Lactation Counseling to Enhance Breastfeeding Rates, Creating Effective Medical Access for Substance Abusing Women, Delivering Perinatal Services in a Family Centered Model, Addressing the Issues of Pregnant Adolescents, and Creating Male Services in an Infant Mortality Reduction Initiative.

Learning Objectives: Identify strategies which will enhance breastfeeding and increase immunization rates. Determine best practice strategies for inclusion of men in perinatal services. Review models which enhance medical access for pregnant and parenting women and their partners. Facilitate discussion on factors that improve enabling services for substance abusing pregnant women.
